What are the earpeices in singers ears for when onstage?
March 7th, 2010 | by admin |Just curious… You know how like, on the Grammys or something you see earpieces in the singers ear while performing on stage… What is that used for?
Actually, nobody got it quite right. It’s used in place of a monitor. A monitor speaker is one that is pointed at the performer so they can hear themselves on stage. Instead of having even more noise, and possible feedback, from a speaker blasting into the microphone, they use an earpiece instead.

Probably a few things, like toning down the sound. Being at a concert can really harm your hearing

because their on stage and the amps are facing away from them
it is hard to hear the music
so often times they are listening to a recording of the song they are playing

They control what they hear. So like if they want more guitar or bass or something they can set it how they want and nothing is over powering. Usually the musicians have them too. They are better than amps because then nothing is over powering anything else and everything sounds right to the crowd and the musicians/vocalists.
