If the computer …
If the computer fails, the machine will mechanically default to a straight stitch, so it will still be useable.

I don’t understand …
I don’t understand why anyone would want or need one of those new plastic machines. What does one do in ten years when the onboard computer is fryed and no parts are available? When computers do everything for you, you never really learn to sew at all…you just guide the fabric. The Singer cast iron machines are the real workhorses and still work after more than a hundred years. True they don’t do fancy stitches, but how many people really use that stuff anyway when making a garment?
