You don’t say which one, but on mine the lever that controls the stitch length also controls the zig zag

I have an old singer. I’m not sure what model you have, but there should be a lever that changes the stitch from straight stitch to zig zag. Look at the front of your machine. Or better yet, do you have the manual.

Depends on the model of the machine. Usually a lever or button or knob; occasionally a cam that has to be removed.
Figure out the model number of the sewing machine and then see if you can find a copy of the manual online. Starters:
