I always remove the selvage, as it usually shrinks more than the rest. Especially if you use a tumble drier to dry your clothes, this is important. If you wash and tumble dry the fabric before sewing, you will often see this happen and you have to remove it to move on to sewing. Tumble drying before sewing, is great, as you can tumble dry it without any seams getting “ruffled” (remember to use polyester thread)…

You don’t have to pin it, though you can if it makes you feel more confident. The pattern encourages not to pin and get used to sewing it straight off.
