This song is a rendition of Paul Van Ostaijen’s poem “Hulde aan Singer” (Oath to Singer) as part of the album “U NU” (translated “NO U” with some imagination), Singer being a hype at the time: a sewing machine. The poem is a satire on such hypes.

“Panem et Singerem” is a play on the Latin phrase “Panem et Circenses” (Bread and Games), signifying that the populace only needs food and a Singer to have a happy life.
