the bobbin thread ends up in the needle and the needle thread is loose but not broken.
This is a bit peculiar.

I need to contact Singer Sewing Machines for instructions on adjusting Straight Stitching.
The only thing I can suggest: if you go to the Singer web site you can download the manual for the 9420. Unfortunately, it'll cost $5.

A new gear was installed; now the slide does not automatically change the position of the push-button. I can't wind a bobbin.
Take it back to the shop.

I have a Singer 401A, the machine is in great shape. It sews well using a walking foot and any other application. I have the original darning foot to use for meandering. (I am new to meandering) When I meander, the thread breaks consistently!
